Mar 16    The Alabama Ballet's Sleeping Beauty
"This would be the most classical, therefore the most challenging," said the artistic director of Alabama Ballet, which is staging Marius Petipa's choreographic masterpiece for the third time since 2002. "Then, probably 'Giselle,' then 'Swan Lake,' then 'The Nutcracker,' then 'Romeo and Juliet.'"

What makes it so? Not only the required execution of the required rigorous techniques, all of which take years of practice, but the dramatic projection of a timeless storyline.

Based on the 1697 fairy tale by Charles Perrault, the story has been told at bedtime, made into a  Disney movie, even subjected to Freudian analysis. The young princess, Aurora, has an evil spell cast on her by the evil fairy Carabosse, falls asleep at her 16th birthday party, naps for 100 years, and is awaked by a kiss from a Prince Désiré, who finds her while on a hunting expedition.

Mar 22    The Scharoun Ensemble of the Berlin Philharmonic
Founded in 1983 by members of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Scharoun Ensemble is one of Germany’s leading chamber-music organizations. With its wide repertoire, ranging from composers of the Baroque period by way of Classical and Romantic chamber music to contemporary works, the Scharoun Ensemble has been inspiring audiences in Europe and overseas for more than a quarter of a century. Innovative programming, a refined tonal culture and spirited interpretations are hallmarks of the ensemble, which performs in a variety of instrumental combinations.

The permanent core of the Scharoun Ensemble is a classical octet (clarinet, bassoon, horn, two violins, viola, cello and double bass), made up entirely of members of the Berlin Philharmonic. When called for, the ensemble brings in additional instrumentalists as well as noted conductors. The Scharoun Ensemble has prepared and presented various programmes under the direction of Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim and Pierre Boulez. Mar 23    The Wonderful World of Reptiles
There are an estimated 10,000 species of reptiles throughout the world. Being limited to a warm climate, due to their cold-blooded nature, reptiles are surprisingly adapted to survive and find the safest nooks and crannies. Reptiles are found under rocks and high in the trees depending on their needs. Join us as we welcome Stephen Faughn, County Extension Agent for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, to the Anniston Museum as he discusses the wonderful world of reptiles with live examples! This program is included with museum admission. Seating is limited. Auditorium doors open at 10:45 AM.
