Officials say bike trails at McClellan could be a boon for economic development

1,000-acre woodland tract in northeast Anniston may soon belong to the city, and a proposal to build mountain biking trails there is drawing interest from local officials and international mountain biking advocates alike.
The undeveloped former Fort McClellan land west of the Eastern Bypass portion of U.S. 431 is under control of the McClellan Development Authority, and could be criss-crossed with mountain biking trails, according to an MDA board member and others who support the proposal.
Freeman Fite, an MDA board member, suggested at a meeting Wednesday that the MDA pay to build those trails. Fite said Friday that if built, the trails would add to the approximately 33 miles of mountain biking trails atop Coldwater Mountain and create a major draw for riders, many of whom are already coming to Coldwater from around the world.
Trail counters installed on Coldwater showed in July that 30 to 35 riders visited there each weekday and more than 100 riders did so over weekends.
